Shark Angels 2024 Impact by the Numbers

Shark Angels U

Delivered 500 hours of engaging educational presentations in person and remote to audiences of all ages worldwide, fostering knowledge and awareness to inspire action in protecting sharks and their vital role in marine ecosystems. Gave 100 students Shark Angels produced shark materials.

Mentorship Program

Mentored seven college students studying marine and environmental sciences, providing hands-on experience and skill development to prepare them for careers in their field. Through research, conservation projects, and real-world applications, these students gained valuable insights and practical knowledge to support their future success in marine science.

Monthly Chomps

Researched and wrote 12 editions of Monthly Chomps, featuring fascinating facts, stunning images, and insightful science articles that drive conservation awareness—reaching 12,000 subscribers, and 200k followers on our social media channels.

Shark Trivia

Over 20,000 people have participated in our exciting and educational After Bites quizzes, both online and at live events. These interactive trivia challenges spark curiosity, test shark knowledge, and inspire a deeper appreciation for these incredible creatures while making learning fun for all ages.

Positive Social Media Shark Content

Created and shared 52 engaging ‘Finfact Friday’ videos on TikTok, 500 educational and fun posts on Instagram, Facebook, X and Linked In, dispelling shark myths and reaching audiences worldwide and generating over 1 million engagement views.

Shark Science Articles

Authored 12 new easy-to-understand articles demystifying the latest scientific shark discoveries, adding to our extensive library of over 30 shark-related articles.

Meet A Shark

Led four unique shark diving expeditions, immersing 80 divers in firsthand experiences to understand sharks’ true nature. These trips cultivate new shark ambassadors while supporting local economies and reinforcing the value of sharks alive rather than dead.

Events

Hosted an interactive booth at New York Comic Con, engaging 500 new people in exciting shark conservation discussions. Attendees learned fascinating shark facts, discovered their importance in marine ecosystems, and left inspired to support conservation efforts.

Shark Angels Programs

Advocacy

  • Fin Free – Advocate for improved shark population management by pushing for policy changes and laws that support sustainable fishing practices and stopping the shark fin trade.
  • Shark Free – Empower consumers to make informed purchasing choices by providing valuable information on products, such as cosmetics, food and vitamins, that may contain shark ingredients.
  • Shark Diving – Offer unique travel experiences that allow divers to learn about sharks firsthand. Creating shark ambassadors and supporting local economies while emphasizing that sharks are more valuable alive than dead.
  • Positive Media – Produce compelling, perspective-altering posts and videos that inspire people to rethink their views on sharks and the issues facing them. Our donated footage of shark finning has been featured on Discovery Channel, National Geographic, CNN and many other outlets. Our founder, Julie Andersen has been featured on Shark Week and will be featured again this year.

Education

  • Online and In person Presentations – Delivered engaging educational presentations and resources to raise awareness about shark conservation and the critical need to protect these creatures. Presented hundreds of hours of interactive programs to children, students, and adults across the globe.
  • Shark Adoptions – Developed a shark adoption program to foster a deeper connection between people and marine conservation. Through this initiative, individuals symbolically adopt a shark, gaining unique insights into its species, habitat, and the challenges it faces. This program not only raises awareness but also empowers participants to become official shark ambassadors, advocating for ocean conservation and supporting efforts to protect these vital apex predators.
  • Shark Trivia – Engaging and entertaining audiences by creating and hosting interactive quizzes and videos on our social media platforms, as well as during events and trips.
  • Shark Laws and Loopholes – A country-by-country resource guide that highlights shark fishing practices, helping travelers make informed decisions.

Science

  • Mentorship Program – Give marine science students real-world experience in shark research, social media, writing, communication and advocacy. This hands-on learning connects their academic knowledge to practical applications, helping them engage the public and advocate for marine conservation.
  • Monthly Chomps – Turning fear into fascination by discovering a new shark species each month! Every edition is packed with fascinating facts, stunning images, and an insightful science article that helps drive conservation awareness.
